Ventura distributed in Spain

This is with a great pleasure and honour that I can say we're now distributed in Spain by BCore.

BCore Disc is the main independent spanish label focused on hardcore-punk DIY culture. In active since 1990, it has relased almost all of spanish hardcore bands in its earliest period, and through the years it has opened its style range to all indie rock tendencies.
It is one of the few labels runned in Barcelona, putting out shows by themselves, editing their own releases, doing their own designs and distributing their stuff through small mailorders.
They've always focused in having total control on what happens around the label and their bands. They've been deeply influenced by the Dischord way of doing.
BCore is the first spanish independent label to have its whole catalog uploaded on the internet to be bought through worldwide music download stores: iTunes Music Store, Napster, MSN.com and other several download sites.

I know that you'd rather read good gossips about us, our girlfriends or us bitching about bands, but hey!!! I'm the master of this blog, it's my blog and those reviews are really good. So I'm posting two more reviews from Germany.


Ventura "Pa Capona" CD (Get A Life! Records)
Wundervoll lieblich gestaltete und auf 1000. Stück limitiertes erstes Album dieser jungen schweizerischen Band mit Mitgliedern der Bands Iscariote und Illford. Ihre melancholische, zurückhaltende Musik bewegt sich im weiten Feld des Noise Rock und Emo im Stile der 1990'er auf Labels wie Touch & Go und Amphetamine Reptile. Die zurückhaltende Art von "Pa Campona" und die Aufmachung vermitteln ein persönliches Bild der Band. Die Produktion unterstreicht das und sorgt dafür, dass die rauheren und lauteren, rockigen Stellen schön laut, dynamisch und druckvoll erscheinen. Ein angenehmes Wechselspiel der Emotionen. Schon bei den beiden Split 10"es von Ventura habe ich den Gesang mit Walter Schreifels zu Quicksand, Rival Schools und auch Walking Concert verglichen, ist er doch stellenweise ähnlich melodiös und heiser. Ich weiss nicht wie die Band diese Vergleiche findet, aber es sie hier noch einmal gesagt, dass ist positiv gemeint!

Die leckeren Kräuterbonbons, wer hat sie erfunden? Die Finnen? Nein, die Schweizer waren's. Während die skandinavischen Kollegen für ihre donnergöttliche und keinesfalls bonbonfarbene Musik bekannt sind, schreibt man unseren eher bedächtigen Nachbarn seit jeher unerreichte Kompetenz in Sachen Edelweiß, Nummernkonten und glücklichen Kühen zu. Von Jodlern und Alphörnen abgesehen, war Musik bislang nicht gerade der Schweizer Exportschlager. Genaugenommen könnte so mancher wohl in ernsthafte Verlegenheit geraten bei dem Versuch, die Namen von schweizerischen Bands aus dem Ärmel zu schütteln. "In der Schweiz gibt's keine Bands!" - Und es gibt sie doch! Vor gut drei Jahren hörte man zum ersten Mal mit Erstaunen von Shilf, und nun machen ihre Landsmänner Ventura aus Lausanne von sich reden mit ihrem Debüt "Pa Capona". Sowohl Shilf als auch Ventura widmen sich nicht gerade ihren eidgenössischen Alpenland-Wurzeln, auch wenn bisweilen ihrem Sound eine gewisse Gemächlichkeit nicht abzusprechen ist.
Während Shilf mit ihren träge-entspannten Americana-Songs eine hitzegeschwängerte Phantasie von endlosen Staubsteppen und saftig-sonnigen Oasen heraufbeschwören, warten Ventura mit intensivem Noise-Indierock auf, der mit trockenem Schlagzeug, schrägen Akustikgitarren und heiser-unmelodischem Gesang ein bisschen an die grungigen Neunziger erinnert. Aber auch ganz sachte kann Philippe Henchoz die Vocals interpretieren, schön zu hören im Opener "Back to Sender", begleitet von den Moll-Akkorden seiner Gitarre und den sparsamen Akzenten seiner Kollegen Diego Göhring am Bass und Mike Bedelek an den Drums. Langsame Passagen, dann lärmende Eruptionen - davon lebt diese Platte und erwischt den Hörer auf dem schmalen Grat zwischen Entspannung und entschlossener Energie. Mit dieser Metapher schließt sich der Kreis, und wir sind wieder angelangt bei scharfen Felsenkanten und sanften Almwiesen. Und wer geduldig ist, hört nach 20 Minuten auch noch den hidden Track - ebenfalls ein vergessen geglaubtes Relikt aus den Neunzigern.
Der neueste heiße Scheiß ist es zwar nicht gerade, aber Vorsicht, it's cool man!
Als Fußnote für Wissbegierige eine kleine Erläuterung des Albumtitels: Auf die in einen alten Holzbalken geschnitzte Devise "Pa Capona" hat ein Schweizer Kommandant, Brigadier Philippe Henchoz (!), 1971 anlässlich einer Übung seines Stabes in Savèse hingewiesen. Es handelt sich um einen Ausdruck im Savièser Dialekt, welcher von "Ne pas caponner" abstammt und auf deutsch etwa mit "dem Schicksal ins Auge schauen" wiedergegeben werden könnte.

VENTURA Pa Capona (2006)
Je pensais vraiment ne jamais parvenir à dépasser cette voix qui risque de poser problème à plus d'un auditeur de bonne volonté... Pourtant, à l'usure, on finit par s'habituer à ce chant naïf et quelque part assez moche, ce qui est d'autant plus aisé que le reste est loin de l'anecdotique. Ce disque est manifestement l'histoire d'une passion pour le ROCK, et en particulier de celui qu'on affuble de l'ambigue épithète "indie", comme me l'expliquait avec des étoiles dans les yeux Philippe au moment de me le remettre. Les spécialistes excuseront je l'espère le quasi-béotien que je suis de citer Slint, Shellac ou Sonic Youth en guise de référence un brin bateau, toujours est-il que ce disque possède de nombreux atouts, à commencer par un nombre non-négligeable d'explosions d'intensité dans laquelle il y a toujours une certaine volupté à se laisser emporter. Par ailleurs, Pa Capona a la très agréable particularité de gagner en accroche à mesure qu'on avance dans l'album, les morceaux se faisant de plus en plus mélodieux et majestueux, en bref : mémorables. Ceci dit, il est vrai qu'il y a chez Ventura quelque chose de candide qui risque d'agacer d'autant plus dans les quelques moments un peu faiblards qui jalonnent le disque. Un disque de très bonne tenue malgré tout, d'une sincérité impudique mais touchante.

CORTEZ/VENTURA
Die 10 Inch ist warscheinlich das coolste Format, was es gibt, zumindest finde ich das, und für Split Veröffentlichung bietet sich die Sache erst recht an. In diesem Fall wird sich das Vinyl von den Schweizer Bands Cortez und Ventura geteilt, wobei beide Formationen mit jeweils zwei Songs vertreten sind. Cortez nutzen ihre Seite um klar zu machen, wo in Richtung Noise(core) der Hammer hängt, besonders « a bout de souffle » könnte sich mit seinen knapp neun Minuten als Geduldsprobe für zart besaitete Gemüter herausstellen. Auch das erste Stück « M.T.V. » würde ich als gottverdammten Killer bezeichnen. Unsane lassen grüssen, von solcher Musik gibt’s in dieser Qualität leider immer noch viel zu wenig. Ventura hingegen haben sich dem wesentlich gängigeren Genre Indierock verschrieben, was aber keinesfalls heissen soll, dass die Jungs ihre Sache schlecht machen, ganz im Gegenteil. Auch im internationalen Vergleich würden mir eher wenige Bands einfallen, die hier qualitativ mithalten könnten. Sowohl « Trains » als auch « I keep starting » erweisen sich als kleine aber feine Hits, die auf ihre Art zu überzeugen wissen. Ach so, in so einem Fall muss man ja noch entscheiden, wer im Endeffekt als Sieger durchs Ziel gegangen ist, aber das solltet ihr vielleicht lieber selbst herausfinden. Now I feel like I have to inform you about good bands and good people that we met through that virtual worldwide web we commonly call internet.
First is a rock band from Nice in France called 28.50. They have only released a demo yet, but a good demo and this what we only ask for.

And then a band from the US (Bloomington, IN) called push-pull. They are three Mike playing straight but very good and clever rock music.

One of the Mike's owns a recording studio called Russian Recording situated in Nashville, IN. There's no need to say anything about this recording studio, just look at the pictures.

Pa Capona reviews....the second.

Here are two new reviews of Pa Capona and good reviews......the first one in german and the second in french. But man!!!! The second one comes from a punk/ska webzine.What about that!!!!

So beschaulich wie man immer meint geht es in der Schweiz ja nun wirklich nicht zu. Gut, in den ersten zehn Sekunden von "Back To Sender" schon. Das ist der erste Track des Albums "Pa Capona" von Ventura. Dann allerdings folgt eine Noise-Eruption und bei Gott, es ist nicht die letzte gewesen auf dieser famosen und überaus nett gestalteten 13-Track-CD. Irgendwo zwischen Noise-Rock und Emo reihen sie sich zurecht ein, der Grundton bleibt indes ein ruppiger. Nachzuhören z.B. auch hier . .: www.vntr.net :.

Entre deux splits avec des groupes helvétiques très recommandables (Cortez, Disco Doom), une participation à une BO et une autre à la compilation du collectif YYY, Ventura a trouvé un petit interstice dans son emploi du temps pour caler l'enregistrement de son premier album. Formation assez récente, Ventura n'en était pas moins attendu au tournant puisqu'il compte en ses rangs des membres de Illford et Iscariote, deux fleurons de l'indie-rock romand. Les amateurs des seconds pourront s'y retrouver à condition d'aimer les ballades, paradoxalement ce que Ventura fait le mieux (l'excellente Let Yourself Go en fin d'album). A l'écoute de Pa Capona et dès le contrasté "Back to Sender", l'auditeur est pris en étaux entre une noise racée et une indie-pop émotive. On ne sort pourtant pas de cette saine mélancolie avant la dernière note de ce disque, au demeurant très joliment présenté dans un emballage cartonné. On sait qu'un certain nombres de groupes noise/indie helvétiques sont loin d'être manchots, mais avec ce bon album Ventura est en lice pour le poste d'ambassadeur.

Ventura on a compilation

Hi everyone!!!
Ventura has accepted to be part of a local compilation, when I say "local" I mean Swiss....
The compilation, called "Bon Pour Les Oreilles", has been set up by Christophe Schenk who's a journalist for L'Hebdo, a weekly Swiss paper.
Christophe did a very good job by asking awesome bands like Shora, Velma, Fauve or even The Evpatoria Report to be compiled.

At the end, 12 bands gave the authorisation to give a link for one track only. This compilation will be on line only for a length of 3 months. You can download the tracks by clicking the right button bla bla bla bla.....

Pa Capona - 2006 / Get A Life / Dist. Irascible

Pa Capona se révèle être un premier LP en forme de coup de poing, après deux split-eps sur le label Get A Life !, ainsi qu’une contribution au film d’E. Antille fin 2005 ( Rollow). Habitués de la scène romande, Ventura compte d’anciens membres de feu Shovel, Marvel, Illford ou Iscariote. Dans la droite lignée des plus belles heures du label Touch and Go, le trio (guitare, basse, batterie) cultive un indie-rock à base de guitares bien sales et noisy, qui n’est pas sans rappeler les pointures américaines du genre que sont Shellac ou Superchunk. Parfois proche de l’emo-rock, Ventura sait se lâcher complètement là où ça fait mal pour son auditeur. Et ce Pa Capona rend pleinement justice à leurs auteurs par une production brute et presque live. Les compositions restent brèves, à l’efficacité indéniable. Quand l’impact électrique diminue, c’est uniquement pour mieux cultiver la tension rythmique de l’ensemble (évoquant parfois les lignes mélodiques incisives de Slint), et révéler les errances vocales de Philippe Henchoz, souvent sur le fil du rasoir (plane le spectre d’un Kurt Cobain, période In Utero). Jouissif, carré d’approche et pas toujours facile à encaisser, Pa Capona demeure un refus du compromis, mais surtout un vrai album de rock indépendant, bien loin des chemins balisés.

Ventura - Pa Capona

One of the best feelings in the world is to spontaneously check out a band that you have no prior knowledge of and come to find out that they are quite good. More so, they aren’t just good, but the bands album ends up being one of the better things you’ve heard all year. I usually get this only a handful of times throughout the year. I was beginning to get a little worried however, as here I am in June and I hadn’t had many those special cases up until this point.How I ran across Ventura is really pretty simple, boredom and MySpace factor into it. So yeah, going from one profile to the next I eventually stumbled across this trio, which after hearing only a couple tracks off their page I knew it was right up my alley.

VENTURA is a three piece from Giez-sur-Lausanne (Switzerland) founded in summer of 2002 when current and past members from such fine acts as Illford and Iscariote got together with the firm intention to pay tribute to their first musical love:indie rock.....this was an added flavor of some bad ass riffing as a bonus. After some gigs, serious things started for them when swiss video artist Emmanuelle Antille offered them to use some of their music to her new film "Rollow". That gave them the opportunity to go in the studio to record some tunes and the film has since been shown at the International Film Festival in Locarno. Ventura has shared stage with fine acts such as The pAper chAse, Mediactions, Cat On Form and Scumbucket. In 2005, the band released two 10'' splits vinyl in a row on Get a Life Records. The first split was shared with the mighty swiss band Disco Doom and the second with the brutal Cortez. In 2006, Ventura's first full length will be out. Indie rock or not, their new album Pa Capona partly reminds me of acts like Hum or Houston on tracks like "I Keep Starting" and "Limits". Definitely a throw back in a sense to the driving/pounding hard rock that was more prominently found through the early to mid nineties. All I can say is that I am digging this quite a bit and I suggest that you check it out at their MySpace. I could seriously listen to stuff like this forever.

Cortez / Ventura - "Split 10"
Post-Hardcore / Hardcore torturé / Rock indie :: 2005 - Get A Life!

Pour sa seconde sortie, Get A Life ! Records a choisi de réunir sur un même Split (à l’origine, un vinyle 10 pouces) deux groupes assez proches sur le papier (il s’agit de 2 trios, tous les 2 originaires de Suisse) mais relativement opposés en ce qui concerne leur approche de la musique. La première de ces deux formations m’est d’ailleurs familière car il s’agit de Cortez, groupe dont j’avais déjà chroniqué la première démo dans ces colonnes. Comme dans sa précédente réalisation, le trio helvète pratique toujours un mélange sans retenue de Post-Hardcore bien lourd et de Hardcore torturé ultra-agressif. Mais cette fois-ci, au lieu de faire « un morceau, une ambiance », le groupe a choisi d’incorporer ces 2 styles dans une seule et même compos. Ainsi, si I.M.t.v. (morceau qui figure également sur le LP « Initial ») débute dans un style Post-Hardcore coutumier (riffs écorchés, rythmique lente et plombée), il est très vite frappé de secousses sonores que ne renieraient pas leurs compatriotes de Knut (à grand renfort de batterie-mitraillette, de double pédales et de riffs hypnotiques). Un morceau qui laisse véritablement sur les genoux. En comparaison « l’inédit » A bout de souffle est bien moins schizophrénique. Mais c’est surtout un monument de lourdeur dans lequel – ô merveille – la basse joue un rôle prépondérant (chose étonnante compte-tenu que le groupe se produit sans bassiste sur scène). Au final, ces 2 morceaux ont en commun de véhiculer une même sensation d’oppression mise en exergue par les rythmiques pachydermiques et ou chaotiques à l’extrême. Bref, pas le genre de musique à écouter un jour comme aujourd’hui où le ciel est au beau fixe. En revanche, cette première partie de split pourrait bien être votre CD de chevet un soir d’orage. 8,5/10
Le style pratiqué par Ventura, groupe formé en 2002 par d’anciens membres d’Illford et Iscariote, est lui bien différent. Leurs influences, c’est du côté du rock indie typiquement US qu’il faut aller les chercher. Dès les premières notes, j’ai tout de suite pensé au groupe qui a bercé mes années de lycée : The Pixies. Que ce soit dans le son de guitare crasseux qui vire au noisy, par l’omniprésence dans le mix de la basse bien ronde ou à cause de cette voix pas toujours juste mais très versatile, tantôt nerveuse, tantôt emprunte de sensibilité. D’ailleurs, chose qui ne fait que renforcer cette filiation avec la bande à Frank Black, Ventura sait lui aussi proposer, avec tout autant de réussite, des morceaux aux atmosphères bien éloignées. Le premier, Trains, déboule à 200 à l’heure avec son feeling très rock’n roll barré, son chant écorché et son seul mot d’ordre : provoquer le défoulement. Ce qu’il parvient sans peine. Le second, I keep starting, est lui beaucoup plus posé, même si les passages de guitares ultra-saturées qui succèdent, en fin de morceau, à des arpèges très mélancoliques, trahissant un sentiment de rage contenue. S’ils se révèlent moins puissants que ceux proposés par Cortez, les 2 morceaux de Ventura ont le mérite d’être très rafraîchissants. Et puis, il est toujours agréable de renouer avec des choses qui rappellent des bons souvenirs. 7,5/10
En conclusion, une chose est sûre, voilà à nouveau un CD qui ne ternira pas la solide réputation qu’est en train de se forger la scène Suisse.

Ok....now it's getting a bit scary with all those good reviews we're having. I'm starting to think that we're stalked. But where's the police when we need it?????

VENTURA/DISCO DOOM

Label : 10’’ Ep, Get A Life Records 2005
Ventura est né autour de musiciens vus chez Iscariote et Illford avec une seule envie commune jouer un indie rock énergique, mélodiquement accrocheur et noisy. Les Suisses y arrivent haut la main avec « issues », un morceau construit quasiment en deux parties qui laisse transparaître l’efficacité de l’écriture du trio. Si Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, Unwound, vous ont fait frémir un jour, ce morceau de Ventura risque de vous titiller l’oreille. Disco Doom vient de Zürich et comme son nom l’indique on a droit à des rythmes presque dansant sur lesquels viennent se poser des guitares à envolées noisy. « Captain petal mr.scar » sonne très pop rock (lisse ?) avec une jolie voix un poil plaintive. Entre new wave/post punk et gentil indie rock faussement lo-fi, Disco Doom ne semble pas vouloir choisir. C’est peut être mieux ainsi ? Un split 10’’ chaudement conseillé pour ceux qui veulent éviter de ressortir des vieilleries de leur discothèque histoire de vérifier que c’était mieux avant…

CORTEZ/VENTURA

Label : 10’’ Ep, Get A Life Records 2005
Ventura s’est formé durant l’été 2002, il comprend des membres de feu Iscariote et Illford. Basé en suisse le combo annonce que l’aventure Ventura a prit forme lorsque le trio s’est décidé de revenir à leur premier amour : l’indie rock…passablement noisy je rajouterai. Guitare un brin crassouse, limite grungy, mélodie enivrante, rythmique appuyée, chant sensible et nerveux. Unwound, Sonic Youth, Husker Du/ Sugar, Built To Spill, Sicbay, Dinosaur Jr sont dans la place…Deux titres seulement mais qui donnent comme une envie d’y retourner, ça tombe bien un album sort début 2006. Cortez maintenant. On a déjà dit tout le bien qu’on pensait du trio guitare, batterie, chant, dans ces mêmes pages lors de la sortie de leur excellent premier disque fin 2005. Ces deux titres « i.m.t.v » et « a bout de souffle » ont été enregistré avant « initial ». Du coup on ne retrouve pas l’ampleur de la production du l’album. Malgré tout, même avec un son un peu cradingue (trop compressé ?) les deux solides compos passent l’épreuve du feu avec une réelle classe. Leur noise hardcore métallique screamoysant reste à part. Il lorgne tout autant vers la puissance du « profane » d’Ananda que des récents essais discographiques de leurs amis Knut (pour rester en Suisse). La musique de Cortez ne s’arrête pas là et se découvre pesante et toute en retenue sur « a bout de souffle », un inédit de plus huit minutes, qui vaut son pesant de cacahuètes. Si Cortez ne m’a pas encore complètement convaincu en concert, les disques restent des must have ! Un très bon split 10’’ dans une très jolie pochette.

Pa Capona release night

Here we are!
The official release night of our album "Pa Capona" is on its way and it's even sooner than you'd expect.
I have the deep and sincere pleasure to announce that we gonna celebrate on the 24th of May the release of our album at Le Romandie in Lausanne. Don't worry, we're not going to throw pancakes at you, swap Panini football cards or even play rubbish video games, no....we're going to play live. A live set that you'll never forget with classic hits such as "Colour of my dope", "I keep starting" but also new tunes.....

We gonna share the stage with another local band, Ärton Wall. If you have never heard of them, well...it's a shame. They play some Make Up/The Stooges rock n'roll that really kicks ass.

And the cherry on the cake is that you'll only pay a poor 5.- to get in. Yessss!!! I said five bloody swiss francs.
Of course you'll get the chance to purchase Pa Capona, you'll see the feeling of the cover on your skin is incredible.

But here is another one, made by TRANSIT Mag from Geneva. It's actually the second part, if you scroll down to the post from Thursday February 9th, you'll understand that the fanzine mentionned above has already reviewed our split with Cortez and now it's the Discodoom split's turn.
C'mon, it's bloody 8:30 in the morning......you see what I mean, you can also make an effort!!!!
No one with a good review needs to be justified.


DISCO DOOM / VENTURA Captain Petal + Mr. Scar / Issues Get A Life Records
Décidément, Ventura apprécie l'exercice du split. Après celui avec Cortez, chroniqué dans le magazine 33, en voici un autre avec les Alémaniques de Disco Doom, toujours au format vinyle. Groupe de l'est de la Sarine, Disco Doom évolue dans un style rock noisy aux légers accents disco. Ça a au moins le mérite de pleinement justifier le nom du groupe mais ce n'est pas tout. Il y a de bonnes raisons de se pencher sur cette face, à commencer par la voix. Bien que discrète et minimale, elle dégage son lot d'émotions. Le jeu de batterie surprend également tant il est basique mais il soutient très bien le tout, grâce à un martèlement continu de caisse claire. Sur l'autre rive (ou l'autre face), Ventura confirme tout le bien que l'on pensait de lui et de son rock tout en relief. 'Issues' passe de riffs énergiques en moments plus aérés pour terminer sur une magnifique montée en puissance instrumentale, toutes grattes dehors. Grâce également à l'artwork très réussi, la première sortie de Get A Life, le label d'Yverdon, est des plus intéressantes. Il y a peut-être de quoi rester un peu sur sa faim mais voilà deux groupes et un label auxquels il faudra s'intéresser de près…

YYY Compilation

Ventura has been asked to be part of a compilation called "Amazon Grace", released by YYY, a young and innovative swiss collective.
Have you ever wondered why most Internet sites such as Amazon only offer 30 seconds of every track you want to listen to ? Can we really make up our minds about the quality of a song, of an artist in 30 seconds ?
Though it seems impossible to appreciate music in that kind of way, this duration may also lead the consumers to a new form of listening.
YYY suggested a reversal of this commercial oddity.
"Amazon Grace" compiles 77 artists who composed one track of 30 seconds each. Artists such as Kid Chocolat, Opak, Brazen, Scanner, Bruno Fleutelot or Iscariote agreed to give one track of 30 seconds.

Ventura's track is called The Tosser King.
The compilation is available through YYY website and it's only 15CHF.

Cortez/ Ventura "s/t" Split 10" (Get A Life! Records)
Hier die zweite Veröffentlichung eines noch jungen, schweizerischen Labels, das von Leuten betrieben wird, denen es ein Anliegen ist, gute Musik auf einer unabhängigen Basis zu veröffentlichen. Und mit Cortez, die ich von meiner Arbeit für sie kenne und schätze hat das Label einen guten Griff gelandet. Beide Bands sind mit je 2 Track auf dieser 10" EP vertreten. Während Cortez gewohnt brachial, noisig und einigermassen komplex agieren, sind Ventura weitaus rockiger, rhythmischer und ausgelassener. Beides fügt sich aber bei dieser auch optisch nett gestalteten 10" gut zusammen und lässt keine Eintönigkeit aufkommen. Das Sprungbrett für Ventura um richtig Musik zu machen war die Verwendung ihrer Musik im Film "Rollow" von Emanuelle Antille, der auch beim Internationalen Film Festival in Locarno gezeigt wurde. Ihr Sound ist ebenfalls noisig, aber lange nicht so brutal und durchschlagend wie der von Cortez. Die stimmliche Emotionalität von Ventrua erinnert mich hin und wieder an Walter Schreifels zu Rival Schools oder Walking Concert Zeiten. Nicht so schlecht also. Cortez, weitgehend immer noch Geheimtip, haben erst kürzlich ihr Album "Initial" veröffentlicht, das von überall mit positiven Rezensionen auf sich aufmerksam macht.

Disco Doom/ Ventura "s/t" Split 10" (Get A Life! Records)
Weiter oben wurde die zweite Veröffentlichung von Get A Life! Records besprochen, und mit dieser Disco Doom/ Ventura Split 10" nun die Erste. Die Zürcher Disco Doom sind schon seit Ende der Neunziger dabei und musizieren sich mit ihrem lauten Rock mit Pop-Appeal durch den schweizerischen Underground. Neben 2 Alben und diesem Split Beitrag veröffentlicht die Band bald ihr drittes Album. Hier sind zwei treibende, rockende Songs von Songs von Jack, während Ventura weiterhin durch ihren emotionalen, kehligen Gesang auffallen. Während man bei den Songs der Split mit Cortez noch Vergleiche zu Walter Schreifels (Rival Schools, Walking Concert) ziehen konnte, wirkt der Gesang diesmal cleaner und eigener. Zu erwähnen ist noch, dass Ventura aus ehemaligen Mitgliedern von Iscariote und Ilord bestehen.

Pa Capona is out!!!!

That's the news we have all been waiting for: the album is finally out!!!!
I mean, for real, we've fucking done it!!!!!! Our first full length. We are really proud of it, we never expected the result to be that good and we achieved it thanks to a lot of people involved in our project. So I'm gonna randomly thank Patrick Mathey who welcomed us in his comfy recording studio and did an amazing job, Sir Mario Suter who designed the cover and impressed us with his ideas, Joel and Fabien, both CEO's of Get a Life! Records, they worked day and night and supported our laziness and finally our mums who will be our main source of inspiration forever.

We'll properly celebrate the release of Pa Capona on the 24th May at Le Romandie in Lausanne. You'll be able to get a copy of the album at a terrific price. Phil, Mike and me hope to see you there, enjoy with us this evening.

We're getting closer

Hey folks, as I said, Ventura is getting closer to the release of "Pa Capona", we got the cd's pressed and printed, we're now just waiting for the covers to be printed. As we're good guys but broke, we gonna fold them ourselves and insert the cd's. 1000 copies by hand. Just for you, for the fans.Isn't that nice???? Last week, we got interviewed in a local radio, it went fantastic. The most surprising was that we managed to answer seriously to the questions. Review: 2X SPLIT 10" (getaliferecords.com)

Das Schweizer Label Get A Life Records ist noch ganz jung und hat gerade die ersten beiden Veröffentlichungen raus, die beide um die Band VENTURA aus Giez-sur-Lausanne kreisen. Auf die beiden Zehnzöllern verteilen sich gerade mal drei Songs der drei jungen Herren, die in dieser Form im Jahr 2002 mit dem Musizieren angefangen haben. Der Eindruck, den ich aus dieser begrenzten Auswahl gewinnen konnte, ist der von ziemlich rauhem und lärmigen Indierock, der aber auch in der mittleren Phase des Dischord-Labels ansetzt und die Tradition zum Beispiel einer Band wie THE NATION OF ULYSSES in ähnlicher Weise fortführt, wie hierzulande etwa die SUBROSA FALCON ASSOCIATION. Und das ist eine verdammt gute Sache. Hinzu kommt eine Prise klassischen, schrägen Indierocks, und man hat in etwa eine Vorstellung vom Sound. CORTEZ wiederum, ebenfalls ein Trio aus der Schweiz, hauen in eine ganz andere Kerbe und fahren das volle Hardcore-Brett. Interessant ist hierbei, dass zumindest live die Band nur mit Gitarre, Schlagzeug und Gesang auftritt, dafür ist aber das Ergebnis umso imposanter. Von CORTEZ gibt es hier zweimal noisigen Brachialcore. DISCO DOOM aus Zürich, denen die letzte der vier vorhandenen Seiten zusteht, haben so gar nichts mit dem gemein, was ich mit Disco assoziiere. Vielmehr passen sie stilistisch ziemlich genau zwischen die anderen beiden Bands, vermischen lauten Indierock mit intensivem Hardcore und ausufernden Parts. Es geht also sehr lärmig zu auf den beiden Platten, aber einen Aussetzer gibt es unter den paar Songs hier wirklich nicht. Schöne Sache, und vielleicht gibt es in naher Zukunft mal ein paar längere Releases dieser Bands. (7/8) (Christian Meiners)

CORTEZ/VENTURA
Un split 10inch partagé par deux trio. Un split 10inch partagé par deux groupes suisses. OK me direz vous, mais qui sont-ils ces groupes.

CORTEZ nous vient de Bulle, et nous offre un noise hardcore que l'on pourrait classé dans le « typiquement suisse »...Je dirais même un poil plus noisy que l'habitude. Après un récent album « Initial » sortis sur Exutoire Rec et Radar Swarm, ceux-ci nous offre un split 10inch qui comprend uniquement deux morceaux, dont un déjà disponible sur l'album. Un seul morceau « inédit » dirons nous...un peu dommage. Même si il n'y que un seul morceau 'inconnu » nommé « A bout de souffle » ce disque en vaut la peine, et bien long en plus L'autre étant plus court : « l.M.T.v. »Celui-ci est bien riche en diversité, passant de phases hyper noisy en mélodies mélancolique hyper tendue, le tout saupoudré d'explosions énergique. Un régal. Bon j'étais déjà fan du groupe depuis la démo aussi hehehe. A noter également un particularité à ce trio suisse : l'absence de basse. Hé oui, juste une batterie, un chanteur et une guitare. Et autant vous le dire la basse ne manque pas dans leur univers car Sam arrive à emmanché des trucs aux sonorité bien noisiesque et bien sombre/mélancolique comme il le faut, le tout compléter d'une batterie accrocheuse et d'un chant hyper complémentaire à la musique. En suisse les trois amis semblent être reconnu pour une prestance scénique assez intéressante, et ont déjà partagés la scène avec ISIS, THE DILINGER ESCAPE PLAN et autre UNSANE.
L'autre face est prise par VENTURA. Pour certain ce trio venant de Giez/Lausane ne dira rien. Pour d'autres, les chercheurs d'info, vous serez déjà au courant que le groupe contient en son sein des membres de ILLFORD et des excellents ISCARIOTE. A écouter « trains » on croirait écouter un groupe grunge virant à la musique suisse bien sombre. C'est rock'n roll mais glauque d'un certain coté. L'autre morceau, « I keep starting » est définitivement plus indie rock, plus mélodique également encore. Néanmoins à les écouter, j'ai encore cette impression d'avoir une influence ala NIRVANA dedans. C'est différent de ce que CORTEZnous a offert sur l'autre face. Plus rock, plus mélodique, et plus rythmé. Eux aussi ne nous offre que 2 morceaux. Un bon départ déjà hein! Ceux-ci ont également sortis un split 10inch avec DISCO DOOM, et à l'heure qu'il est leur album full-length devrait être enregistré. J'ai également pu lire qu'il avaient été demandé pour faire la musique d'un film (« hollow ») réalisé par l'artiste suisse Emmanuelle Antille.

DISCO DOOM/VENTURA
La première chose qui me marque quand je prends ce disque en main, c'est la laideur de la pochette. Bon une fois de plus ce n'est qu'un impression personelle et donc très subjective! Passons au contenu : les groupes.
Nous commençons avec DISCO DOOM, groupe suisse actuellement inconnu de mon coté. C'est donc une bonne découverte pour moi. Néanmoins le groupe existe depuis la fin des années 90 et a déjà deux albums à son compteur : « Binary Stars » (2003) et « RRKR » (2002). Définitivement influencé par le rock, DISCO DOOM nous balance une sonorité par certains coté noisy et par d'autre très pop. Notament au niveau du chant, très calme et très serein. Celui-ci nous emmène tout au long de l'unique morceau offert par le groupe. Une basse et une batterie donnant une rythmique entêtant auxquels se complète un jeu de clavier et la balance noise-pop des guitares.
L'autre face nous offre VENTURA. Trio suisse ayant également partagé un split 10inch avec CORTEZ sur ce même label : Get A Life Rec. Le trio guitare-basse-batterie nous balance un seul morceau dans la veine de qu'ils nous offraient déjà sur leur autre split. Un indie rock fortement teinté de noise, et auquel je trouve toujours autant d'accent grungy. Il y'a toujours leur sauce rock'n roll derrière qui nous balance une bonne dose d'énergie. C'est assez surprenant comme mélange mais on y prend vite goût en fait! Par contre les fans de ISCARIOTE n'y retrouveront pas le coté lourd qui y prédominait...bah oui y'a des ex-membre de ISCARIOTE dans ce groupe.
Pour info les deux groupes seront en tournée ensemble en avril 2006...ouvrez les yeux et découvrez!

Cortez/Ventura
En direct de la Suisse. Cortez aligne deux titres. C'est rempli de noirceur dans un labyrinthe incendiaire. Ne cherchez pas l'issu de secours. Un trio qui oeuvre dans les extrêmes. Un son tellement condensé qu'on ne peut y glisser un doigt. Cortez broie le hardcore, le metal, le noisecore, malaxe serré serré et jette en pâture une drôle de mixture. "IMTV" suinte la crasse et fout une pression de dingue pendant que "A bout de Souffle" vous la coupe au bout de 8 minutes 53 d'une joute épique qui trouve le moyen pour vous faire planer sur la fin. Cortez power. Autre face, autre groupe suisse. Ventura calme les ardeurs. Avec un ancien Iscariote (le batteur je crois), ce trio oeuvre dans une catégorie de rock plus conventionnel mais qui vous botte les fesses quand même. Ils aiment utiliser le terme indie rock, un truc fourre-tout idéal car leur musique a la qualité de ne pas se laisser mettre en boîte facilement. Sur les deux morceaux, "Trains" reste mon préféré avec tout ce qu'il faut de virilité et de finesse, de dissonances et d'accroches mélodiques pour en faire un putain de titre, motherfucker. Très bon.

Disco Doom/Ventura
Disco Doom, entité mystérieuse originaire de Zürich, qui après deux albums la même année (2005) mais qu'ils n'ont dû distribués qu'à leurs vieilles tantes, sort de sa tanière avec un nouveau titre sur ce nouveau label suisse Get A Life! Disco Doom n'est ni disco et encore moins doom. Quoique s'il fallait choisir, c'est le disco que je choisirai. Pas par goût personnel mais leur rock qui n'est pas vraiment rock délivre un rythme qui invite à taper du pied en cadence avec des vocaux tout ce qu'il y a de plus pop. Etrange mixture pas désagréable en soi mais qui demande à être approfondie. Avec Ventura, on continue de piétiner le lino. "Issues", morceau faussement tranquille n'a l'air de rien comme ça, mais ça devient vite entêtant, le chant a un grain de voix très appréciable et l'accélération continue fait son chemin avec un riff de guitare acoustique qui débarque en plein milieu et une écriture vive et inspirée. Ventura fait son rock avec consistance, un brin de légèreté et pourrait bientôt toucher au grisbi.

Cortez/Ventura
Cortez is no hold back sonic attack on the eardums with superlow tuned, bombastic hardcore sludge. A thrilling reide in a ten ton truck, pounding and grinding its way through two crazy good songs. Not too much repetition here. Cortez is not of that Isis copycat type. This is more for fans of early Unsane and stuff like that. Underneath the vibrant songs is a melodic aspect to be found if you listen carefully. Not much different is the second song "A bou de Souffle" (great movie!). I had to sit down beside my player and keep an eye on the groove. The end of the second song is so heavy and distorted that it nearlyturned into straight noise.
Also Ventura displays two songs here. I've never heard of the band before, but they have Iscariote members in them. Not that you can hear that, Ventura has indie rock roots, but is also driven forth by the heavy bass. Also the sometimes repetitious rocking riffs match somewhat the heaviness of Cortez. The guitars are softer though and show that Ventura comes from a whole other universe than Cortez.
Both bands meet each other where metal and (indie) rock overlap each other.
The second song starts off much more gentle with pure emo/indie rock and gets a bit heavier along the way. Good stuff, but certainly Cortez is a band that got my attention.

Disco Doom/Ventura
This is the first release from Get a Life Records (from Yverdon? France, the place with the coolest squat on earth), so maybe that's the reason why this must be one of the ugliest record covers I've seen in a long time. Ventura managed to produce some solid indie rock with a heavier riff here and there on their side from the Cortez split. Also here Ventura are definitely good in what they do. Nothing special, but a good dose of indie rock that leans towards the heavier side of the indie-spectrum. In the middle of their song they break it down in some sweet melodic riffs with the heaviness of the bass getting in the background for the first time. "Issues" is a good song.
Disco Doom also features just one long song on this split. They're a longer running band from Zurich and you can hear that in the song writing. From garage rockin indie to a crossover of pop and rock. Disco Doom's influences are pretty clear, but they may be local heroes, it does nothing to me. I really don't know what to do with rock like this. I guess it's solid, but that's nearly all I can say from it.

Cortez/Ventura
Le split est en général un exercice intéressant. Il permet à deux groupes (parfois plus) de partager les frais pour un outil promotionnel mais il permet surtout d'originales collaborations artistiques et il en résulte souvent un bel objet, limite collector. Cette fois, ce sont deux groupes de la Romandie non lémanique qui se sont associé : Ventura et Cortez. Les premiers évoluent dans un registre rock assez pêchu. Avec 'Trains', un morceau rapide et très incisif et 'I Keep Starting', plus mélodique et apaisé, Ventura utilise très bien l'espace à disposition pour montrer différentes facettes de son travail. Cortez, de son côté, ouvre les sillons du verso avec le puissant 'I.M.T.v', déjà présent sur leur album 'Initial'. 'À Bout De Souffle' est pour sa part un inédit. Ce morceau montre la face plus aérienne du groupe mais il n'en reste pas moins agressif à souhait. Les deux groupes sont issus d'univers musicaux différents, ce qui rend cette collaboration d'autant plus intéressante. À tel point qu'on reprendrait bien un ou deux morceaux de chacun.

Mixing, mastering and farting the album

The mixing sessions are done now, the labum will kick some real ass!!!! Patrick Matthey did an amazing job regardless some "internal" issues which occured within Ventura.
We mixed 17 tracks in 4 days.
The next step is mastering the album, which will be done on January the 7th @ Greenwood Studio.
We're still waiting for the drafts from our dear Mario Suter, the lucerner designer who's taking care of the album's cover. But I'm sure he'll do a fantastic job.

Ebullition.....

Thanx to everyone who came to see us (+ Cortez) at L'eBullition in Bulle last friday.It was an amazing evening for us, people seemed pretty enthusiastic about the set we played, some of the usual faces were there, but it was still a "test gig" since most of the audience didn't know Ventura and from where I was, I could hear some loud applauses, screamings and "yeeeeeeeaaah's".
Gwen, our sound man, did a fantastic job, I can say that sometimes Ventura is heavy, but friday night we were really heavy thanks to Gwen's touch.
So again.........thank you to everyone, the ebullition staff (your venue is beautiful), the cook for the delicious "Papet Vaudois" and Cortez for inviting us!!!
