Metalorgie review

The French webzine Metalorgie reviewed us again but this time it's Pa Capona's turn. They've been with us since the beginning of Ventura, first by reviewing the 2 splits we did. Ventura wanna hug Metalorgie for that.

Un rapide coup d'oeil sur le site web de ces anciens Illford, Shovel et Iscariote nous apprend que "Pa Capona" signifie en patois Saviésan "Ne pas baisser les bras". A n'en pas douter, le trio helvète s'est efforcé d'appliquer ce précepte, car au bout de 4 ans d'existence arrivent enfin les premièrs disques et surtout ce premier album, véritable aboutissement des efforts de Ventura.

Les deux excellents morceaux du split avec Cortez laissaient entrevoir une tendance à cultiver les assauts bruitistes et écorchés autant que les atmosphères mélancoliques ("I Keep Starting") à travers un indie rock épais et puissant. Sur la même longueur d'onde, les 13 titres de Pa Capona distribuent autant de baffes que de caresses et entrevoient aussi bien l'énergie brute des guitares grasses et incisives que l'efficacité des mélodies classieuses et évidentes. Si on peut légitimement s'aventurer à quelques comparaisons comme Slint et Fugazi ("Violent, All The Time") pour l'aspect bondissant, le songwritting sans fioriture et le malaise quasi permanent ou Dinosaur Jr pour la violence des parties noise, Ventura propose une réelle alternative, voire même une des meilleures depuis un moment dans le genre.

Ventura met en avant un talent de composition bluffant qui, évitant les répétitions et autres essorages de recettes bien connues, mise sur une efficacité sans temps mort. A l'image des distorsions électriques du fabuleux "Limits" ou de la rythmique tragique de "Let Yourself go", chaque titre fourmille de trouvailles qui renouvellent l'intérêt à chaque instant. Capable de la plus grande finesse comme des dégringolades sonores les plus inattendus, Ventura donne le tournis, mais pas celui qui endort l'esprit, celui qui le fait pétiller de milles feux ! Quant au chant, tendu et soutenu par un grain très particulier, son adaptation à chaque situation lui permet d'insuffler une véritable âme sans trop habiter les compositions. Au final, même si on a un peu tendance à se rabattre sur les titres les plus "tubesques" ("Limits", "Thouhts and speeches"), les suisses réalisent un beau carton plein.

Présenté dans un beau digipack et servi par une production typée "live" taillée pour la course, Pa Copona est un premier album étincelant, efficace et très personnel qui saura faire son trou sans difficulté chez les amateurs d'indie-rock noisy de haute volée.

Ventura - Pa Capona (Get a Life Records)

Was eine richtige Indy- oder Postrock-Band ist, lässt sich gut und gerne mit dem Prädikat "Form vor Inhalt" beschreiben. Dies ist für Journalisten, die dem Inhalt üblicherweise eh kein Promille Beachtung schenken, äusserst praktisch. Ich habe mich nun gefragt, welche Form ich dieser Musik denn konkret zuordnen würde. Und die welschen Gitarrenfreaks wecken schon mit ihrem Bandnamen Assoziationen zu Hauf. Ventura erinnert mich also ans momentan stürmische "Herbst"-Wetter. An Wolken, die am Himmel zerrissen und neu gruppiert werden, und dabei unter gleichen Voraussetzungen immer wieder Neues erschaffen. Die oft wiederkehrende Wetterberuhigung und das neuerliche Aufbegehren des Sturms zeichnen Mike, Diego und Philippe gekonnt in Notenform auf Papier. Genauso nachdenklich und verloren wie die bi-polare Musik von Ventura tönen denn auch die Songtitel über die Farbe von Drogen ("The colour of my dope") oder übers Reden und Nachdenken ("Thougts and speeches"). Dass Ventura dabei ihren Hörern eigentlich raten, was sie selbst nicht auf die Reihe kriegen ("Let yourself go" vs "I keep position"), passt irgendwie ins Bild. Und auch dass die drei Jungs und Gastsängerin Valerie Niederöst dauernd gewalttätig seien ("Violent, all the time") halte ich für ein Gerücht - auch wenn sie manchmal tönen, als ob jemand mit einem stumpfen Gegenstand erschlagen würde...

I take the opportunity to thank everyone who came at our 3 shows last week and also the Ebullition in Bulle, the Hacienda in Sierre but not PTR in Geneva. We had a really good time playing with Disco Doom and Sigurd.

Ventura @ PTR in Geneva

Just a quick update to announce that we'll play in Geneva at the L'Usine PTR on the 7th February 2007.

We'll support the Dutch band called Alamo Race Track.

Tras tanta fiesta electro-sushi-chill-out resulta legítimo cuestionarse la vigencia del rock, sin referirse a los aburrimientos clásicos de los grupos de estadio, sino buscando atractivo, modernidad y un shock eléctrico a nuestra epidermis. Ventura logra todo esto y más en su sorprendente debut, Pa Capona, un disco que, por cierto, devuelve todo el impulso y la vitalidad a un género que se creía a la baja.
Y es que este trío suizo sabe cómo sacar el mejor provecho sonoro y emotivo de sus instrumentos -bajo, guitarra y batería-. No sólo eso, se nota que ellos mismos se re enamoraron del estilo que los vio surgir: el indie rock. Ventura logra restituir sensaciones que se creían perdidas, con un olfato innegable por lo complejo y lo dramático, y certeras referencias a héroes presentes y pasados, a veces en un mismo tema (el Smashing Pumpkins más furioso, Idaho, Shellac, Helmet, Dinosaur Jr, Unwound, Slint, Shipping News, The God Machine, And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, incluso Nirvana).
Cada nota es ejecutada con la pasión de quien se le va la vida en ello, nada de efectismos o poses fingidas…el resultado de los 4 días que Ventura pasó en los estudios Aum de la campiña helvética grabando en equipos análogos (un lujo, para ellos) es tan honesto y desgarrador como podrías desearlo en estos tiempos.
Los dos años y medio de ensayo -Ventura es el símil europeo a nuestros locales Congelador o Familea Miranda; gente con disciplina- que antecedieron a Pa capona se reflejan en pleno en la calidad compositiva y en la variedad de matices y recursos empleados en cada tema. Las vueltas de ‘Limits’ y el slowcore apabullante de ‘Ovens’, el tema final, dan como para sorprendente: arpegios, crescendos, y el ataque de voltios que es lo que mejor les sale, esa tormenta ENORME de sentimientos, ruido y groove te deja atónito, jadeante, pidiendo más…es el equivalente sonoro a un orgasmo.
No es raro, pues esta táctica la heredan de bastiones como Mogwai o Come (los maestros en hacer “llegar” un tema). A estos últimos los telonearon dos de los de Ventura en un grupo anterior. De hecho, si bien la locación de su banda es exótica, estos veteranos -doce años de conjuntos en el cuerpo- han compartido escenario no sólo con la banda de Thalia Zedek, sino con grupos como Hood, Helmet, Black Heart Procession, Tarentel, y hace poco, Medications.
Tampoco resulta extraño encontrar a su guitarrista en otro proyecto interesante: Illford, un grupo de post-rock instrumental que dejará felices a quienes disfruten de Mono, y que junto a los mismos Ventura, más otros grupos de la escena como Tobogán y Honey for Petzi (de buena fama en el viejo continente; han grabado ambos con Steve Albini) forman parte de la banda sonora de Rollow, un filme que representa la corriente contemporánea del séptimo arte en Europa, estrenado en Locarno el 2005.
Desde el tema inicial, ‘Back to sender’, Ventura muestra sus garras. Un tema profundo, existencialista, que narra la violencia de la muerte de un joven irresponsable que conduce borracho: “Todos dirán que estás de alguna forma todavía dando vueltas/ y los correos irán de vuelta al remitente.” Esta anécdota postal es la que mejor retrata la crudeza del hecho, del vacío que quedó. Las guitarras se muestran compasivas, y luego enérgicas, incandescentes. ‘I keep starting’ y ‘Colour of my dope’ son los hits en vivo del álbum. Melodías que enganchan desde el primer hasta el último acorde, con una intensidad única. ‘Everything’, ‘Kidneys’ y ‘Violent all the time’ son de una agresión que se termina gozando. Tan brutales como la vida misma.
Pa Capona habla en serio, sin merodeos, directo al hueso. ‘This is hardcore’, aunque sin el sentido irónico, verdades que te caen encima y que metabolizas deliciosamente en cada canción. Y es que, para ellos, la música es un medio de expresión potente, vital, indispensable.
El debut de Ventura restituye aquella magia original y fulminante que encandiló en discos como In Utero, Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness y Young Team, con una frescura y una garra propios del tercer milenio. ¿Rock is dead? Pamplinas, con discos así está en su mejor momento.

2006 _ Get a life records

Très bon disque, très bonne surprise que ce disque de Ventura. J’ai vraiment bien accroché. Un trio suisse assez classique en somme, qui joue un indie rock noisy, mélodique et sombre. Certes, les trois sont antinomiques, mais les ambiances varient tout au long du disque. D’emblée, le jolie digipack nous interpelle, digisleeve classieux avec petit poster, et disque numéroté main ; rien que l’objet mérite l’achat. On démarre sur plusieurs titres bien envoyés, basse claquante, batterie efficace, guitare tantôt clair, tantôt en disto, avec un son d’ensemble qui est assez groovy. Le tout sonne un poil grunge, comme tous les groupes de la scène de Seattle à l’époque, ou bien noisy comme pas mal de disque Amphetamine reptile. Mais le groupe n’a pas son pareil pour aussi nous desservir des pures mélodies maladives et envoûtantes. Je pense aux deux titres clés à mes yeux que sont « limits » et « small », qui prouvent à eux seuls l’excellente teneur de ce « pa capona ». Et l’ensemble m’a rappelé un groupe français disparu, Virago, pour ceux pour qui ça parle…

Ventura has some news to announce. We've been asked to play some gigs and of course we accepted the invitation.
In resume, here are the facts:

It's the Fest#6 and we'll play with other bands, which are Make It Pink, Roebucks, Feutre Et Chandel and Guitar Fucker.

- 13th January 2007 @ Lozane's Burning VII in Lausanne.
Lozane's Burning is every winter's main event in Lausanne, local bands join their forces to bring you a spectacular show, pretend they're all really funny and everything following a specific theme. This year's theme is "Lausanne's bands celebrate death."

- 17th January 2007 @ Bleu Lézard in Lausanne.

- 10th February 2007 @ Hacienda Sonic in Sierre.
We'll share the stage with Sigurd and Rectangle.

We hope we'll see you at one of those shows.

Some news about the Treibhaus

Hi people.
There has been some changes with our gig in Luzern @ Treibhaus this coming Saturday.
Our beloved friends and split mates (is that english???) Disco Doom had to cancel the show.
Instead the very intriguing Opak (from Vevey) are playing with us, as well as Manesh (from Luzern).

I hope everyone will be able to make it, it's gonna be a hell of a night.

Review of the split with Cortez

Here is to remember how it all started. Metalorgie, a French webzine, reviewed the split 10'' we did with our friends the heavy crazy fuckers from Cortez.

A l'image du récent split Monarch / Elysium, ce partage de galette fait office d'une rencontre helvète plutôt inattendue. En effet, Ventura (ex Illford, ex regrettés Iscariote) jouent un indie rock classieux tandis que Cortez, qu'on ne présente plus, s'adonnent toujours à leur hardcore bruitiste, sombre et puissant.
Depuis 2002, Ventura s'efforce de conjuguer mélodies et assauts bien noisy au sein d'un rock limpide et humble. Les suisses vont droit au but sur les 2 morceaux dont la nervosité va croissant. Distillant des mélodies entêtantes sur les premiers instants et à la limite de la rupture de cordes en fin de course, Ventura s'emporte et nous avec ! Sur les parties les plus calmes, le chant clair et un poil nasillard rappelle les vocalises de Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) tandis que les passages orageux, carrément noisy quand la guitare se laisse aller, viennent jouxter Dinosaur Jr, early Sonic Youth ou encore Shellac, rien que ça ! Les suisses restent toutefois à bonne distance de leurs influences et préparent efficacement le terrain pour la sortie de Pa Capona, premier album !
Cortez nous avait allégrement donné des "hauts le coeur" avec Initial, c'est peu de le dire ! Les 2 titres présents sur ce 10", "A bout de souffle" et "I.M.T.v" (repris pour Initial), ont été enregistré avant leur premier album et ne s'expriment donc pas avec autant de hargne. Sur ce point, Il faut dire aussi que la production moins travaillée confère sans aucun doute un peu moins de puissance et d'ampleur à l'ensemble. Ma fois, on s'en accommodera volontiers tant les gaziers nous lattent déjà lourdement les neurones. Cortez a su mélanger et s'approprier les meilleures cartes du hardcore moderne et pioche dans le noisecore (Knut), le metal (Ananda), voir même le screamo pour un résultat qui ne laisse pas indifférent et qui tire à l'aise son épingle du jeu. "A bout de souffle" et son chaos pesant distillé au compte goutte, tout en retenu, tient en haleine sur 8 minutes et justifie à lui seul l'achat du disque.
Un 10" qui propose 4 excellents morceaux et s'offre un artwork sacrément classe illustrant fort bien la rencontre.

I wanna thank Greg from the French webzine stnt who obvioulsy enjoyed listening to Pa Corona. Although my dear Greg, may I correct you on one point, we do enjoy drinking beers, but not to the point where we called our album Corona.

Les deux splits 10’’ partagés avec leurs amis Cortez et Disco Doom sortis en 2005 avaient plus que mis la puce à l’oreille concernant l’évident intérêt qu’on devait porter sur le devenir des suisses de Ventura. On retrouve dans ce combo de rock très, très noisy un gars vu dans Iscariote. Mais cette fois ci il ne faut pas trop s’attendre à une musique chaotique et métallique comme pouvait en jouer le défunt groupe franco suisse. Ventura s’aventure plutôt sur les plates bandes d’un Dinosaur Jr, d’un Drive Blind ultra vénère qui se seraient bouffés du Unwound, du Smart Went Crazy, voir du Melvins light, à s’en faire péter le bide. Plus près du son d’un label comme Amphetamine Noise Reptile que celui développé par Sub Pop dans les même années 1990, Ventura ménage que rarement sa monture. A l’aide d’une production aux petits oignons, Ventura, arque bouté sur une rythmique basse batterie supra lourde pour le genre, lâche les reines de l’animal qui part dans un galop noise plombé aux mélodies pop rock cradingues mais lumineuses ?? Le tout est joué sans retenue avec une fougue qu’on se réjouie d’entendre. Je ne sais pas pourquoi j’ai pensé à leurs compatriotes de Brazen et à l’album de transition qui n’a jamais existé entre l’excellent EP post hardcore noisy « …as flood decrease » et l’indie rock épais, épique ultra produit et incompris de « orphaned ». Au-delà de ce délire de mon petit crâne qui frôle ici la surchauffe je tiens à souligner le fait que Ventura se renouvelle dans presque chaque chanson et y affirme un songwritting suffisamment excitant et personnel pour tenir le coup sur les treize morceaux de cet excellent premier album, présenté dans un joli digipack. A ne rater sous aucun prétexte !!

A report on the next clues

I've been regularly reading a very good webzine called Nextclues, which is owned by a French music addicted but living in the US. I'm sure he's planning to stay for 7 more years in the US, the next French presidential elections are next year and it's going to be a fucking mess.
If you feel like improving your french reading, I advise you to read the complete review he did about most of Touch & Go albums to celebrate in his own way the 25th anniversary of the label.

So what a surprise when I saw that he reviewed Pa Capona and I can honestly say that he liked it a lot.

Ma sale manie de toujours lire les bios avant de faire tourner les disques m’a d’abord fait croire que ce Pa Capona ne serait pas pour moi, tout cela à cause d’une étiquette emo pop qu’ils se sont collée. Ils rajoutent qu’ils sont un trio d’obédiance noise venant de Suisse romande, que leur groupe comprend des membres d’Illford et Iscariote (et de Shovel, aussi, il semblerait) et qu’ils vouent un culte à l’âge d’or de Touch And Go et Amrep. Voilà qui est un peu mieux, j’appuie sur play.

Pour Amrep, ils peuvent repasser. Pour Touch And Go, ce n’est pas vraiment ça non plus. Pour la noise, on verra plus tard. Pour l’emo, ils ont vu juste.

Emo, oui, mais emo à la Dischord, l’emo avec la tête haute, les couilles bien pendues et mon doigt qui n’arrête pas d’appuyer sur ce triangle dès la fin du quatorzième morceau, celui qui est caché.
Jamais un disque “emo” de m’aura autant fasciné depuis la sortie de Con Art, le chef d’œuvre de Smart Went Crazy, groupe grandiose de D.C. honteusement passé inaperçu. Je ne m’en remets pas, nouvelle écoute. Ventura utilise les mêmes ficelles invisibles qui faisaient de Con Art l’entourloupe parfaite : la variété des plans est tout simplement extraordinaire, les surprises pullulent, des idées différentes germent à chaque instant, des parties en 5/4 surgissent de nulle part, les mélodies sont à peine croyables, les ambiances (ou émotions) varient comme si elles obéissaient à une logique qui m’échappe encore, la basse peut claquer comme dans le Chicago sound ou se faire imperceptible, les pêches, contretemps et saccades imposées par une batterie en tous points majestueuse font que oui, ils avaient aussi raison quand ils parlaient de noise, et quand la violence se dégage enfin, c’est sur deux ou trois mesures, juste avant de retomber dans un magnifique final tout en arpèges, son clair, sûrement post-rock, de la trempe d’un Sharks Keep Moving. Un tour de force phénoménal, un disque d’une intelligence rare.

Je ne compte plus combien de fois cela fait que je pousse le bouton de lecture, même si maintenant c’est uniquement pour le plaisir, sans analyse, sans penser que je dois rédiger une chronique. Ce cd, après trois jours, j’ai l’impression de le connaître par cœur, tout en sachant qu’il fait partie de cette race qui révèle quelque chose de nouveau à chaque écoute. Je sais me la jouer “émo” moi aussi et je vais vous dire ce qui a fait que j’ai adoré cet album dès les premières minutes, toujours en employant la même méthode du “j’aurais pas dû aimer”. Un premier morceau qui dit, dans un style certes plus élaboré : “Prends pas ta caisse, dude, t’es bourré comme un âne”, je devrais en toute logique le retourner à l'envoyeur, au mieux le négliger, même si une touche certaine d’humour noir l’enrobe. Oui mais. Oui mais cette putain de voix est incroyable ! C’est tout d’abord l’accent anglais qui m’a troué le cul. On comprend tout ce que ce type dit, absolument tout, son élocution est parfaite, chaque mot est au bon endroit, les paroles sont ludiques, souvent amusantes, toujours smart ass - la seule faute de goût vraiment, c’est qu’il écrit color avec un u. Et puis surtout il a la chance de posséder ce timbre... Je ne sais même plus tout ce que j’ai pu énumérer comme similitudes au long de ces innombrables écoutes sans réellement mettre le doigt dessus... Perry Farrel, Kurt Cobain, Black Francis, Shudder To Think, Bivouac, Psychedelic Furs, Smart Went Crazy, Albini, Drive Blind, Slint... Je n’ai pas su arrêter avant que ça ne devienne trop ridicule, mais j’ai vite compris que la réalité était que ce mec avait son truc, un style unique.

C’est sur Get A Life!, c’est limité à 1000 exemplaires (je n’étais pas très loin du perfect : 066/1000) et la pochette, qui se plie plus simplement qu’une carte Michelin mais que j’ai niquée dès la deuxième ouverture, nerveux que j’étais de replonger dans l’univers de Ventura, est superbe (si ça avait été une linographie, ça m'aurait bien aidé, mais elle n'est que sérigraphiée...), avec un poster en insert. Une fois que je vous aurai précisé que Pa Capona signifie “ne pas baisser les bras” en romanche, tout sera dit.Je ne vois aucune raison de ne pas faire péter un bon (10/10)

Crucial Blast

I recently discovered this very good record label and a webstore as well. It's Crucial Blast, from the US, in Hagertown, Maryland to be precise. As I said, it's a record label and they released really good and interesting bands such as The Goslings, Orthrelm, Spickle or Totimoshi. Their vision of music is pretty brutal, heavy and experimental. We can qualify Crucial Blast underground and cutting edge. God Bless Crucial Blast.

So it was an amazing honour to be reviewed by them since they distribute Pa Capona. Here is the review:

Get A Life (Swiss import)

This young Swiss trio follows up their split vinyl releases with CORTEZ and DISCO DOOM with this full length CD, which holds some beautifully constructed post-rock/indie rock that morphs into crushing waves of sludge riffage. At first, VENTURA's songs channel the sort of soft/loud dynamic of early 90's indie rock, with soft sparse melodies intertwining with brooding bass work and expressive drumming, somewhere between CODEINE and SLINT with raspier singing and weird childlike lyrics. When the band shifts into the loud sections though, it gets really loud, and heavy, sometimes slinging out sludgy metallic MELVINS riffs, sometimes pounding out huge swirling noisy passages that sound similiar to the current crop of heavy post-rock bands like TIDES and MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT. There are songs like "Let Yourself Go" where acoustic guitars are situated prominently alongside roaring heavy guitars in a way that reminds me alot of DINOSAUR JR.'s Green Mind, and the general way that the melodic indie rock parts are structured with the heavy parts is really cool. Pa Capona definitely feels like a combination of the heavy-edged post-rock of SHELLAC, SLINT, PINEBENDER, and CODEINE, mixed with HUM's volume eruptions and eruptive metallic post-rock. Comes packaged in a beautifully designed, cardboard Arigoto-pack style box that folds open to reveal the disc, insert, and poster art. Limited to 1,000 copies.

Ventura on mx3

From tomorrow (15th September), the first Swiss music web portal will be on line. The site will be opened to all Swiss bands and performers broadcasted by SRG SSR (the national Swiss radio) but also to all the musicians and artists who want to be heard. The site is mx3. Centered around music, mx3 will allow you to listen to all the titles put on line by the artists -classified by style, language or area- to create your own playlist and to send it to other users. The site will also allow the artists to sell its music.
Mx3 is clearly inspired by MySpace but will surely place itself as an essential Swiss web portal and as a direct access to Swiss artists and bands with the advantage of being closely connected to the different national radios.
The radios will then seriously look at the increasing popularity of the bands through this web site and will help the most promising talents.
But you must know that Ventura has taken this opportunity not to be part of the business, but to be simply heard by more people out there and to pull chicks.

Review from the French Riviera

Pa Capona got reviewed in a French magazine called Nouvelle Vague. Here it is:

Pour moi l’une des seules possibilités pour que le marché du CD perdure, c’est que les maisons de disques et les artistes se décident enfin à faire de beaux objets, qu’on ait plus seulement dans les bras une petite galette ronde couleur argent mais tout un concept. C’est ce qu’a compris Ventura en nous proposant dans un souple boîtier en carton un objet design tiré a seulement 1000 exemplaires. De quoi attiser collectionneurs et jalousie. Bien sur on ne peut pas présenter que du visuel sinon autant aller dans un musée, il faut un musique qui colle a l’ensemble et là aussi c’est réussi avec un cocktail du meilleur de la scène du début des années 90 (Nirvana, Dinosaur JR, Sebadoh…) Bref une remise au jour de tout ce qui nous a fait vibrer. Mais ce n’est pas qu’un copié collé, l’originalité est la aussi par la basse omniprésente, ou le chant cassé, apportant un ambiance sombre mais jamais oppressante. En conclusion voila un bel objet qui donne la voie à suivre à beaucoup 3 / 4 .

Since Ventura is not really well photo documented - does it make sense???- what I mean is that we don't have tons of photos of us playing, I thought I could post a few from the show we did in Luzern last year at the Treibhaus with Lem Phago and our friends Parazit.

Talking about the Treibhaus, we're planning to play a show with our beloved doomies, the amazing Disco Doom. The date still needs to be confirmed, but it will be in December. I'll keep you informed.

Pa Capona on Semtex Magazine

The very good Belgium webzine Semtex did a nice review about Pa Capona. So this is with honour that I'll post it here:

Ventura is a young Swiss threesome featuring former members of Iscariote and Illford. After a split record with the noisecore band Cortez and a split with the space rockers Disco Doom, the band has now released its debut full-length called PA Capona on Get A Life records. The album comes in a beautifully designed brown cardboard box, limited to 1000 copies. PA Capona caught my attention right away and after more than 20 spins the last few days I'm totally convinced the future looks bright for these guys.
I like the sound of Ventura, that's for sure. It immediately reminded me of some great bands of the grandeur 90s (and beyond) Touch & Go era. Slint, Shellac, Superchunk even today's Pinback: every Ventura song vaguely hints to the richness of these bands. The dirty sound of the bass and guitar are heavenly. The song structures, the singing and the unattended noisy outbursts, along with the occasional singer's screams are equally great. Therefore surely, PA Capona never is boring. In the obscure field in between noise-rock and mature emo, Ventura writes dynamic songs with lots of devotion and inspiration.
Still I'm a bit puzzled as well. It's because of the voice I guess. By times I really like the singer's voice, but then again I'm not sure what to think about it. Some lyrics appear to be pretty shallow and I'm kind of annoyed by them. When Ventura's singer sings a line as "What the fuck is with you people - Why do you have to be - So goddamn - Violent all the time", I'm afraid it sounds a bit over the top and unreal. I mean the song sounds really emotional and true... but these lyrics just don't fit at all.
Oh well, I guess most people don't really take note of what singers are actually singing. So maybe I'm pushing this review in the wrong direction. Because believe me, Ventura sound really good. Their songs are hooky, dirty yet perfectly measured. The band skilfully switches from uncompromising noisy rock to beautiful melodies. If you're in for a sentimental journey back to the indie nineties, get your hands on this album. I'm watching out for one of their live shows.

Ventura cesse les splits et enchaîne sur l'album, le premier. Pas question de capituler ! Devise locale de la commune de Savièse que ces Suisses ont acollé sur une très belle pochette cartonnée. Pa capona, cri de ralliement de compatriotes particulièrement têtus, prêt à attaquer les parois les plus hostiles pour décrocher l'eau. Cet album serait-il leur montagne à eux ? Treize morceaux. 53 minutes d'âpres émotions (70 avec le morceau caché en toute fin de parcours). Une tendance générale à se draper de noire. Une sourde colère. Il est clair que la face Ventura n'est pas le versant le plus facile à escalader. Pourtant, la musique de Ventura glisse facile de prime abord. Une montagne qui n'a pas l'air bien sauvage. Pas de vilains pics et de falaises abruptes. Ventura déclare avoir voulu créer ce groupe comme un hommage à l'indie-rock qu'ils chérissent tant (et que leur parcours musical n'avait jamais fait sentir : des ex-Iscariote, Illford et Shovel). Et c'est vrai que leur rock à trois possède une touche de classicisme et des mélodies aisées à capter, avec suffisamment de virilité pour ne pas faiblir dans des passages difficiles, des décrochages où l'ivresse du vertige se fait sentir avant qu'une brusque bourrasque ne vous remette dans le sens de la montée. Mais c'est la faille qui nous guette. Plus on s'en approche et plus cette montagne abordable décèle en son sein des malaises, des fêlures, une noirceur sous-jacente, une mélancolie qui devient continue, sale brouillard qui ne se dissipe jamais. Ventura navigue entre traumatismes post-Slint et Bitch Magnet et un indie-rock enlevé avec une basse bien lourde et des explosions de guitare saturée pour la dimension noise. Ils ont su créer une ambiance personnelle à base de germes connus. Une nonchalance, une fragilité, toujours sur l'équilibre avec la gravité et quelque chose de rêche et douloureux. Des écoutes répétées qui révèlent son lot de richesse, essayer encore et encore et l'eau n'est pas loin d'être au bout du chemin.

Ventura distributed in Spain

This is with a great pleasure and honour that I can say we're now distributed in Spain by BCore.

BCore Disc is the main independent spanish label focused on hardcore-punk DIY culture. In active since 1990, it has relased almost all of spanish hardcore bands in its earliest period, and through the years it has opened its style range to all indie rock tendencies.
It is one of the few labels runned in Barcelona, putting out shows by themselves, editing their own releases, doing their own designs and distributing their stuff through small mailorders.
They've always focused in having total control on what happens around the label and their bands. They've been deeply influenced by the Dischord way of doing.
BCore is the first spanish independent label to have its whole catalog uploaded on the internet to be bought through worldwide music download stores: iTunes Music Store, Napster, MSN.com and other several download sites.

I know that you'd rather read good gossips about us, our girlfriends or us bitching about bands, but hey!!! I'm the master of this blog, it's my blog and those reviews are really good. So I'm posting two more reviews from Germany.


Ventura "Pa Capona" CD (Get A Life! Records)
Wundervoll lieblich gestaltete und auf 1000. Stück limitiertes erstes Album dieser jungen schweizerischen Band mit Mitgliedern der Bands Iscariote und Illford. Ihre melancholische, zurückhaltende Musik bewegt sich im weiten Feld des Noise Rock und Emo im Stile der 1990'er auf Labels wie Touch & Go und Amphetamine Reptile. Die zurückhaltende Art von "Pa Campona" und die Aufmachung vermitteln ein persönliches Bild der Band. Die Produktion unterstreicht das und sorgt dafür, dass die rauheren und lauteren, rockigen Stellen schön laut, dynamisch und druckvoll erscheinen. Ein angenehmes Wechselspiel der Emotionen. Schon bei den beiden Split 10"es von Ventura habe ich den Gesang mit Walter Schreifels zu Quicksand, Rival Schools und auch Walking Concert verglichen, ist er doch stellenweise ähnlich melodiös und heiser. Ich weiss nicht wie die Band diese Vergleiche findet, aber es sie hier noch einmal gesagt, dass ist positiv gemeint!

Die leckeren Kräuterbonbons, wer hat sie erfunden? Die Finnen? Nein, die Schweizer waren's. Während die skandinavischen Kollegen für ihre donnergöttliche und keinesfalls bonbonfarbene Musik bekannt sind, schreibt man unseren eher bedächtigen Nachbarn seit jeher unerreichte Kompetenz in Sachen Edelweiß, Nummernkonten und glücklichen Kühen zu. Von Jodlern und Alphörnen abgesehen, war Musik bislang nicht gerade der Schweizer Exportschlager. Genaugenommen könnte so mancher wohl in ernsthafte Verlegenheit geraten bei dem Versuch, die Namen von schweizerischen Bands aus dem Ärmel zu schütteln. "In der Schweiz gibt's keine Bands!" - Und es gibt sie doch! Vor gut drei Jahren hörte man zum ersten Mal mit Erstaunen von Shilf, und nun machen ihre Landsmänner Ventura aus Lausanne von sich reden mit ihrem Debüt "Pa Capona". Sowohl Shilf als auch Ventura widmen sich nicht gerade ihren eidgenössischen Alpenland-Wurzeln, auch wenn bisweilen ihrem Sound eine gewisse Gemächlichkeit nicht abzusprechen ist.
Während Shilf mit ihren träge-entspannten Americana-Songs eine hitzegeschwängerte Phantasie von endlosen Staubsteppen und saftig-sonnigen Oasen heraufbeschwören, warten Ventura mit intensivem Noise-Indierock auf, der mit trockenem Schlagzeug, schrägen Akustikgitarren und heiser-unmelodischem Gesang ein bisschen an die grungigen Neunziger erinnert. Aber auch ganz sachte kann Philippe Henchoz die Vocals interpretieren, schön zu hören im Opener "Back to Sender", begleitet von den Moll-Akkorden seiner Gitarre und den sparsamen Akzenten seiner Kollegen Diego Göhring am Bass und Mike Bedelek an den Drums. Langsame Passagen, dann lärmende Eruptionen - davon lebt diese Platte und erwischt den Hörer auf dem schmalen Grat zwischen Entspannung und entschlossener Energie. Mit dieser Metapher schließt sich der Kreis, und wir sind wieder angelangt bei scharfen Felsenkanten und sanften Almwiesen. Und wer geduldig ist, hört nach 20 Minuten auch noch den hidden Track - ebenfalls ein vergessen geglaubtes Relikt aus den Neunzigern.
Der neueste heiße Scheiß ist es zwar nicht gerade, aber Vorsicht, it's cool man!
Als Fußnote für Wissbegierige eine kleine Erläuterung des Albumtitels: Auf die in einen alten Holzbalken geschnitzte Devise "Pa Capona" hat ein Schweizer Kommandant, Brigadier Philippe Henchoz (!), 1971 anlässlich einer Übung seines Stabes in Savèse hingewiesen. Es handelt sich um einen Ausdruck im Savièser Dialekt, welcher von "Ne pas caponner" abstammt und auf deutsch etwa mit "dem Schicksal ins Auge schauen" wiedergegeben werden könnte.
