Last week end we played in Paris at the Mécanique Ondulatoire with Grand Final and Enablers.
I just want to thank everyone we met that night, you have made us very proud of being part of this incredible evening.

So in random order, we would like to deeply thank Greg Rejuvenation, Karine "Françoise Massacre", Olivier, Abir for coming all the way from Rennes, Thierry from T-DT-B, Nicolas from Music Fear Satan, Doris from Grand Final, Marixxme, everyone at GTOK? GTKO! and all the others that I forgot....

Updates, news and other stuff

We had a blast two week ends ago, playing with Equus in Vevey and John Sars in Zurich at the famous Rote Fabrik.

Thanks again to them for sharing these fine moments with us!!!!

Now, back to the usual news part....

As you probably know by now, we will play in Paris in March with the fucking excellent Enablers, the gig will take place in La Mécanique Ondulatoire (only French can find fucking names like that for a venue!!!) on March 28th.

We will also play in Fribourg at Le Nouveau Monde with our buddies from Berserk for Tea Time.

This gig will take place on April 12th.

And last but not least, the best fucking record label on earth is having its first night!!!!

Get A Life! Records will be celebrating its success, its good taste in independent music and its flourishing future.

Three bands from the Get A Life! roster will blast our ears until our pants are wet, these bands are Yog, Zatokrev and Vancouver.

The evening will take place at Le Romandie in Lausanne on Saturday, February 9th.

Please support the local scene and come to see these three cool bands, or if you don't, get a fucking life for fuck sake!!

Fresh news

Hi everyone.

We have some cool news to announce regarding concerts and future release, because we're working our ass off!!

First the concerts.

On December 6th, we will support the amazing band Qui the night they'll play in Le Romandie (in Lausanne). So it means that I will surely shake David Yow's hand that night.

On January 12th 2008, we will play again at the now famous Lozane's Burning VIII.

This year's theme will be announced soon, but as always, you can expect from us to cover songs from bands we're the only one to know.

If you wanna come, you better buy your tickets in advance, because it's always sold out.

And finally, we've been invited by Noise Magazine to support the very good Enablers from San Francisco.

The gig will take place on March 28th 2008 at La Mécanique Ondulatoire in Paris.

A future release is in process for Ferbruary/March 2008, it will be a 7'' split vinyl that we'll share with the fabulous John Sars, also from Switzerland.

And again, it will be release through Get A Life! Records.

“Simply the best fucking band on Earth”. Il fallait oser, VENTURA l’a fait. Voilà comment s’annonce le groupe sur son MySpace. Autant dire qu’à la lecture d’une telle phrase on attend un truc énorme derrière. Et derrière, on a donc ce “Pa Capona”, premier album du trio suisse composé d’ex-ILLFORD/SHOVEL/ISCARIOTE, qui vient arpenter la sphère indie rock. Premier contact avec la bête: digipack somptueux limité à 1000 exemplaires numérotés et dont les pièces internes semblent avoir été faites main. On perçoit déjà en VENTURA le groupe désirant se démarquer des autres sorties et de ce point de vue, la réussite est totale.

Dès les premiers accords de “Back To Sender”, on sent dans le trio la volonté d’accoucher d’un album au son brut et cradingue, renvoyant directement au début des années 90 quand NIRVANA et SONIC YOUTH balançaient leurs accords dissonnants avec ces prods rugueuses si particulières. Intemporel, VENTURA reprend donc le flambeau de ces formations, sans se soucier de ce qui marche actuellement. Les 13 titres présentés ici sont dans un pur esprit rock, articulé autour du sacrosaint tryptique guitare/basse/batterie, le tout accompagné d’un chant clair et écorché authentique. Ne cherchez pas ici de démonstration technique, de hargne ou de fougue, VENTURA est un groupe qui envoie sa musique à la face du monde avec ses tripes, jouant sur les émotions, les nuances, les ambiances, avec une volonté certaine de faire réagir l’auditeur.
On trouve ainsi de purs moments de bonheur mélodiques avec “Back to Sender” et “Ovens” mais également des pièces bien plus âpres comme “The Question” et “The Colour of My Dope”, voire bruitistes comme “Kidneys” et “I Keep Position”, ou totalement envoûtant comme sur “Limits”.

On a l’impression à l’écoute de “Pa Capona” de rentrer dans un univers unique au fur et à mesure que les minutes filent, avec un sentiment de malaise qui déboule crescendo, comme on le resentait avec SONIC YOUTH à sa grande époque, cette sensation de décadence sonore qui vous envahit, dont on ressort interloqué et qui peut autant séduire que répulser. Reste la voix de Phil, parfois limite, qui se fond très bien dans l’esprit d’ensemble mais qui a tendance à agacer à la longue. Affaire de goûts…

VENTURA est une formation qui se fout des modes, qui lève son majeur en direction de tous les groupes qui jouent la carte du mainstream, du formaté et du trop propre. Les suisses osent s’affranchir de tout, évoluant dans leur propre sphère, quitte a choper le statut injustifié de groupe mort-né… En tout ceci, VENTURA a résumé l’essence même de l’esprit rock originel et c’est déjà énorme. A découvrir pour adorer ou détester.

The most surreal gig

On behalf of Ventura, I wanna thank everyone who came last saturday to the dollhouse in Môtiers.
I can honestly say it was the most surreal gig I've ever done and the hottest too.

Next week end

Just a quick reminder to tell you that we'll be rocking the dollhouse in Môtiers next week end, on saturday at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

We strongly advise you to come early, not because it will be sold out (ahahahahaha!!! joke of the week!!! Ventura and a sold out show), but because it's part of an outdoor art exhibition and you can have a nice 2 hours long walk in the countryside.

And finally, enormous congratulations to Ventura's God, Roger Federer who won Wimbledon for the 5th time in a fucking row.

Summertime

We feel like keeping you posted on what will happen for Ventura this coming summer.

First, I can assure you we're not going to get suntanned since we'll be in our practice space most week ends to write and rehearse new songs.

Apart from that, we'll be playing two important shows this summer.

Emmanuelle Antille, our dear friend and video artist asked us again to be part of her new project called Rock Da Dollhouse.
This project will be part of an outdoor contemporary art exhibition (Arts en Plein Air) situated in the Swiss countryside (Môtiers/Val de Travers). Rock Da Dollhouse consists of a giant dollhouse built out of wood in which is included a living room, a corridor and a room located under the roof. During the night, the lights of the house will remain lit as if this one were truly inhabited. Each saturday during 3 months, 13 bands will play a live set in the living room for free.

Ventura will play in the dollhouse on the Saturday 14th July @ 16:00 PM.

And finally, on Friday 10th August, Ventura will play at this year famous and really cool For Noise Festival in Pully.

You should really come because we can already tell we'll do a pretty special live set and also the amazing Swiss band The Young Gods will entirely play the album TV Sky in the exact tracking order. Isn't life swell?????

French distribution

I'm pleased to announce that from now on, we'll be distributed in France by La Baleine, which means you'll find Pa Capona much easier.

Officially, the realease date was 9th of May.

Since we have only around 100 copies left of Pa Capona Version 1.0 and we decided we'll sell them only at the gigs, you'll now find in shops Pa Capona Version 2.0.

Version 2.0 is a just a change of packaging with a glossy cd case, which means for those who purchased the V1.0, it will be soon a bloody collector!!!!

La Baleine will also released the 2 vinyl splits we did with Cortez and Disco Doom.

Reviews and a bonus

The other day, I read through all the reviews about Pa Capona we had until today and I couldn't believe how amazing those reviews are!!!! So I just wanna take this opportunity to thank everyone who spent some time listening to the album and then writing about it. On behalf of Ventura, thank you very much, it means so much to us, you can't imagine.

This week, we had 2 new reviews. The first one from the fanzine/webzine Cafzic and the other one, which will appear in next month's issue, is from the French magazine Rocksound. They'll also include in the CD sampler that comes with the magazine one of our tracks, Back To Sender.

VENTURA " Pa capona " (Get a life) CD

Il y a des disques qui bousculent, qui touchent tripes et cœur en même temps… VENTURA est une formation de Suisse Romande dans laquelle on retrouve du SHOVEL, ISCARIOTE et ILLFORD. Musicalement c’est rock, noïse, pop, bruyant, malsain… Malsain mais mélodique, fuyant et attirant. J’aime beaucoup le chant qui, ne nous le cachons pas, fera de suite penser à KURT COBAIN. Complainte plaintive, voix qui bascule, qui trébuche, qui donne la larme à l’œil sur un paquet de morceaux. Le groupe alterne pause sans sourire, tristesse visible à la commissure des lèvres, paupières qui flanchent, mélancolie insoutenable avec un rock fiévreux, tendu aux variations noïsy grandioses.
A la première écoute je me suis senti débordé, c’était beau mais bancal, j’ai réessayé, je me suis posé et là que voulez-vous, en plein mille, j’ai sombré. « Ovens » est parfait, je frémis, « Let yourself go » aussi, « Back to sender », « The question », « Everything », « Limits ».
En regardant vers Lausanne on entrevoit de belles choses mais il n’est pas certain que les habitants soit aussi flatteur envers leur grosse bourgade. Pour faire une telle musique il faut avoir l’esprit bien songeur, les racines sensibles, ce sont de véritables forcenés de la mélancolie avec des rêves noirs peu recommandables.

Well, last week end Philippe, under his solo project's name Minsk, gave a very intimate gig for a friend's birthday. All I can tell is that Phil put all his heart in this effort.

I spent an amazing time listening to him covering so good different songs from bands such as Shellac, PJ Harvey, Guided By Voices, The Flaming Lips or The National.

I couldn't resist posting the video of one of them: Low's Death of A Salesman.

Ventura in Krinein

The French website Krinein reviewed Pa Capona and it's another match that Ventura won!!! Zdenek 0 and Ventura 1.

Unfortunately if you can't read French you won't understand a word of what Zdenek wrote but also, you won't be able to read that website and really, that's a shame because it's a good website.

Ventura - Pa Capona

Il aura fallu près de quatre ans à Ventura pour livrer ce premier album. Attente méritée pour qui s'était laissé séduire par leurs splits en compagnie de Disco Doom ou Cortez, tant les trois Suisses (hum...) relèvent le défi de produire un disque bruyant qui ne se contente pas de défenestrer l'auditeur.

Bras de fer

Histoire de ne pas trop donner l'impression de sans cesse répéter les mêmes paroles, on vous évitera l'habituelle rengaine sur la qualité et la vitalité de la scène amplifiée suisse. Le nombre de ses acteurs ne semble toutefois pas faramineux puisqu'on y trouve régulièrement des têtes connues, ici des membres de Shovel, Iscariote et Illford qui se sont retroussés les manches pour devenir rapidement incontournables. Pour l'anecdote, on signalera au passage que le titre vient de la devise de Saviésan, qui signifie « ne pas baisser les bras ». Ca tombe bien, on vient de parler de manches, avouez que la vie est cocasse. Quoi qu'il en soit, on ne surprendra personne en annonçant que l'ombre de Fugazi plane largement sur cet album, qui s'étend d'un post-rock (voire hardcore) cataclysmique à un rock noisy à la langue bien pendue. On y ajoutera un dernier style : l'emo. Aïe, en voilà un mot qui fâche et pourtant, ici pas d'eyeliner et de sapes lustrées, mais bel et bien un emo viscéral et tendu comme un arc. Tout cela pour dire que, si la basse et les rythmiques cognent souvent, si les guitares savent se montrer denses et grenues et si le chant est aussi nauséeux que fragilisé, le trio possède assez d'expérience pour varier les plaisirs/douleurs.
Entêtement tapageur sur le rythmé I Keep Position, mélancolie et instruments liciers pourr I Keep Starting, qui se dilate jusqu'à la tourmente, stances menaçantes et fracas ponctuels sur Violent, All the Time : sans trop bouleverser les édits des pionniers, la triplette est assurément capable de défier l'ennui et de signer des compositions abouties et sans entraves. Toujours en équilibre entre placidité et conflagration sonore, la musique du combo atteint toutefois ses cimes sur Limits, parfait pour des travaux de démolition lorsque les cordes se mettent à fuser, sur Let Yourself Go, où l'acoustique se mêle aux exhalaisons électriques pour un rendu aussi dramatique qu'il est grisant de puissance, ou encore Thoughts and Speeches, dont les riffs finaux vous amèneront à énoncer un « les bras m'en tombent » de circonstance.

Emporté et écorché sans virer à l'inaudible, ce premier disque de Ventura est publié en édition limitée et serti d'un packaging de ceux qui donnent encore envie d'acheter des disques plutôt que d'accumuler ces fichiers uniformément ternes. Pour ceux qui sont arrivés jusqu'à cette conclusion et dont l'intérêt est titillé, il faudra donc se montrer diligent pour profiter de cet petit carton que l'on n'a pas senti venir.

Ventura in Magic

I never thought that one day we'd be reviewed in Magic, a French magazine which is very.....how can I say....very poppy and trendy.

Apparently they enjoyed listening to Pa Capona. Here is the proof.

On aurait pu bêtement passer à côté de Pa Capona, par surmenage ou par facilité. Par ici, la saturation grasse de la basse lui donne des airs de rouleau compresseur, et par là, une batterie adopte forces syncopes, plus punk qu'un porc-épic. A l'arrière plan, le chanteur s'époumone dans un pur style emo oldschool.

Mais en y réfléchissant, ce versant brutal et primal rend possible un savant équilibre de ruptures, il contrebalance son équivalent d'épisodes en creux dans la noise de Ventura. Lorsque le chanteur s'arrête et reprend son souffle, son filet de voix cassée peut adopter un registre mordant, une ironie qui se paie la tête en vrac: du grunge, de la power pop, du hardcore académique - pourquoi pas du Mormon-core (oui ça existe!!).

Ecoutez-le ânonner "Aaahaaaye luuuv yooou..." sur fond de garage crasseux. Un sourire, un haussement de sourcil, ou le parfum de Coca Light des après-midi de slacker: quelque chose de léger, de transparent est venu s'inscrire en filigrame.

Ventura in Versus Magazine

We appeare in this month's issue of the very good French magazine Versus.

And the cool thing is that we have a 2 pages interview plus a very positive review at the end.

Since they had serious problems with the release of this issue, the magazine is only available throughout France.

We were really happy to see that they put to Pa Capona a better mark than Sunn O)))/Boris for Altar.

Ventura + Thee More Shallows

We've just been asked to play at Les Docks in Lausanne and the cherry on the cake is that we'll support an amazing band: Thee More Shallows.

They're from San Francisco and they released their new album on the clever label Anticon.

So the evening will be Wednesday 18th of April and the entry is free.

Which means no excuse.

Core and Co review

You probably all wonder why the Ventura blog is mainly about reviews. It's because our heads are full of new riffs, lyrics and songs' structures for our next release, we can't remember all the amazing reviews we received since the release of Pa Capona. All apologies and thank you for your understanding.

But we're not fucking chess players.

Anyway, here is another review, this time from the French webzine Core and Co.

Il m'en a fallu du temps pour me pousser à écrire cette chronique. Et pourtant, si vous lisez ce qui suit, vous comprendrez que ce "Pa capona" est un grand album. Pourquoi tant de lenteur alors ? Et bien parce que j'ai mis du temps à entrer dans l'univers de VENTURA.

En effet, pas évident au début de s'y faire, à cette voix pas toujours belle (et pas faite pour ça), parfois nasillarde ("small"), parfois énervante ("Kidneys"), mais également méchamment enivrante quand il le faut ("the colour of my dope", "Limits", ...). Au niveau musical, nous sommes donc dans l'emo, mais prenez le au sens noble du terme, pas ce que MaTuVu peux balancer à longueur de journée. De l'excellent emo, avec des ambiances magnifiques, des titres qui prennent aux tripes comme "the colour of my dope", "small", "Limits", (etc...) des riffs parfois mélancoliques et ensuite sacrément rageurs ("Let yourself go"), une batterie (menée par Mike BEDELEK, ex-ISCARIOTE) qui canalise toujours cela de la manière la plus juste.

Après deux premiers splits aux côtés de DISCO DOOM et CORTEZ, on peut dire que l'essai du premier album est transformé. Les riffs sont vraiment prenants (aaah les riffs de fin de "thoughts and speeches"), et surtout ils arrivent toujours de façon claire, et réussissent tout de suite à "énerver" les passages calmes qui les précèdent. On peut parler un peu de noise dans la musique sur certains passages ("thoughts and speeches" encore une fois) mais la voix est trop différente des productions noisy ! Allez on osera même penser à du post-hardcore sur le premier titre "back to sender" où là encore les riffs font mouche et nous prennent d'assaut. Mais l'esprit rock reprends largement le dessus sur les autres titres, "I keep starting" en est le meilleur exemple.

Si en plus je vous dit que toute cette excellente musique est livrée dans un artwork original, en édition limitée (et numérotée) à 1000 exemplaires (et avec même un poster en noir&blanc), que pourriez-vous demander de plus ? Allez hop, filez moi tout de suite acheter cet album sorti chez GET A LIFE !
